American owned Caldwell Tanks, the largest privately held water storage company in North America, was awarded a water tank project in Wheeling, West Virginia.
Work on an $8 million, 1 million-gallon water tank project at The Highlands is expected to begin soon.
The tank, which is expected to provide additional water capacity and pressure for the retail site, is being conducted by Caldwell Tanks of Louisville, Ky. It will be located on a hill near the new Straub car dealership, situated across Interstate 70 from the main Highlands development.
Ohio County Administrator Greg Stewart said the company is scheduled to begin moving its equipment to the work site Sept. 7. The tank will be double the size of an existing tank, painted with the Cabela's logo.
"We'll be excited to get that started," Stewart said. "It's going to increase capacity and pressure for that area."
Funding for the project includes a $6.4 million federal Economic Development Administration grant and a $1.6 million West Virginia Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council loan.
In addition to the tank - which will be the same "T"-like shape as the existing water tower - a booster station will be installed along with a 16-inch water main that will run near Wheeling Hospital and nearby Heritage Trail.
"It should help the hospital and Elm Grove. ... With all the growth at The Highlands, we needed additional capacity there," Stewart said.
He noted additional capacity also will be helpful in case there is ever a large fire in the area. For example, if a future Marcellus Shale gas drilling site catches fire, more water would be available to fight the blaze.
The extra water will also serve as a backup supply when the city of Wheeling has a large waterline break that forces the city to shut off its service for days at a time.
