American owned Caldwell Tanks, the largest privately held water storage company in North America has begun construction on an $8 million water tower at The Highlands.
The tank is being erected on a hill near the Straub car dealership, which is located across Interstate 70 from the main Highlands development. The new tank is expected to provide additional capacity for the retail site, in addition to increased pressure.
Work is being conducted by Caldwell Tanks of Louisville, Ky. At 1 million gallons, the tower will have double the capacity of an existing tower painted with the Cabela's logo, located across I-70.
Along with the tank, a booster station is scheduled to be constructed and a 16-inch water main that will run near Wheeling Hospital and nearby Heritage Trail.
''The water tank and waterline project will benefit the entire county water system and will be of benefit to the Elm Grove section of Wheeling. It provides a second pump station to back up the first, increased storage and supply for the whole county,'' Stewart said via e-mail.
In terms of safety, more capacity also will be helpful if a large fire ever breaks out. The additional capacity also will help Wheeling residents if the city needs backup during a long waterline break.
Funding for the project was made possible by a $6.4 million federal Economic Development Administration grant, in addition to a $1.6 million West Virginia Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council loan.
