An Energy-Optimizing Tank Primed for a New Campus Facility

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign contracted with Caldwell, asking that we provide them a 50,000 Ton-Hour Thermal Energy Storage (TES) tank for their Campus Chilled Water System (CCWS). This 6.5 million gallon tank helps meet the 7,000 tons of additional cooling requirements for the new Petascale Computer Facility built at the university.

The university found the following aspects yield key benefits with our TES tank:

  • Based on historical pricing, the financial model projects an annual energy cost avoidance of $860,000.
  • The tank allows the university to serve new loads without increasing their electrical peak demand, which conserves valuable infrastructure.
  • The system enables future building energy conservation measures to take similar advantage of this strategy, providing more flexibility in purchase of energy.
