Caldwell Tanks Wins UPS Plane Pull Co-Ed Division

Plane Pull Back In Louisville in 2013

The UPS Plane Pull presented by ResCare took a sizable step forward in its second year back on the runway at Atlantic Aviation in Louisville. This year's event added five teams over last year's total (up to 38) and raised more than $112,000, up $12,000 from a year ago.

One of the great stories form the 2013 Plane Pull involved Special Olympics athlete Dallas Derringer. Dallas made this awesome fundraising video to support his Plane Pull efforts, and it clearly paid off as Dallas raised $4,101.58 for his team — Dallas' Cowgirls (and Boys). The total easily gave him the honor of being the Top Fundraising Special Olympics Athlete at the event.

Derringer wasn't the only first-time top fundraiser to produce an impressive number. Ross Davison from presenting sponsor ResCare took overall Top Individual Fundraiser honors for the first time, raising an eye-popping $8,493.10. That total helped lead ResCare to another Top Fundraising Team title. Through individual fundraising and a number of events in the lead-up to the Plane Pull, ResCare raised a team-best $16,153.82 in addition to the company's event sponsorship.

Out on the runway, only one team managed to defend its title from 2012. The Champion Trucking Heavy Haulers had to go to their third “bonus” pull (for teams that raised more than $1,500) to reclaim their Men's Division crown. The DiscoverCares team had put up a time of 6.83 seconds and the Heavy Haulers had pulled 6.86 and 6.84 seconds in their first two efforts. However the third pull came in at 6.53. The Heavy Haulers had to wait out the pulls of two other past Men's champions, but neither could dethrone them.

Longtime Plane Pull participants Caldwell Tanks took the Co-ed Division championship. They posted a 6.85 second pull early in the day, more than a half second faster than the 2012 division winning time. It's not often that early times hold up throughout the day, but only two teams — Demandsam.com from Aguiar Law Office and Plane Awesome (the Russell County Lakers) — came within .25 seconds. It was the second Co-ed title for Caldwell Tanks who also won before the event moved to Downtown Louisville as the Big Brown Truck Pull for four years.

Longtime Plane Pull sponsor LINAK took home a title as well with their women's team claiming the Women” Division crown with a pull of 10.72 seconds.

The event Spirit Award returned once again to the team from Kaleidoscope, keeping that prize in their control going back tot he Big Brown Truck Pull years. Kaleidoscope has taken over the mantle of doing full-blown productions for their pre-pull cheer. This year's effort included music, dancing and a cardboard replica of the Plane. Kaleidoscope, which serves people with intellectual disabilities, had a special reason for pulling this year as well. One of their clients who loved the Plane Pull had passed away since the previous year and they pulled in his honor.

The Plane Awesome team didn't waste a trip to Louisville from Russell County, despite falling short of the Co-ed Division title. The first-year team took the award for the best team T-shirt, no small feat in a crowded field of excellent productions.
